Electrical power supports propulsion auxiliaries, navigation, communications, pumps, lighting, control systems and emergency functions. Technical knowledge for inspection begins with generation, distribution, protection and continuity of essential services.

What You'll Learn in This Lesson

  • Explain shipboard generation and distribution
  • Recognise main and emergency power concepts
  • Identify electrical protection evidence
  • Inspect basic electrical condition safely
  • Connect electrical reliability with essential services

Generation and Distribution

Shipboard generators feed switchboards that distribute electrical power to machinery and services. Load sharing, protection and safe switching arrangements support continuity and equipment protection.

Essential and Emergency Services

SOLAS Chapter II-1 includes electrical-installation requirements intended to maintain services essential for safety under emergency conditions. Inspection should therefore consider both normal and emergency supply arrangements.

Protection and Isolation

Circuit protection, insulation integrity, earthing arrangements, safe isolation and clear identification reduce electrical risk. Technical inspection should never require unsafe exposure to live parts.

Evidence of Reliability

Generator tests, emergency-power tests, insulation records where applicable, alarm history, breaker maintenance and defect logs can support the physical inspection.

Common Visual Indicators

Loose or damaged enclosures, contamination, overheating evidence, temporary wiring, poor cable support and blocked ventilation warrant attention and proper technical follow-up.

Electrical Knowledge for Surveying

The survey-oriented objective is to understand function and evidence well enough to identify when specialist electrical assessment or corrective action is needed.

Technical inspection is strongest when physical condition, operating evidence and maintenance records tell the same story.IMT Technical Learning Notes
