Maritime risk management is the structured process of identifying uncertainty and hazards, evaluating their significance and applying controls to reduce risk to an acceptable level.
Shipping operations combine people, machinery, weather, cargo, navigation, environmental hazards and commercial pressures. Risk management provides a disciplined way to understand what can go wrong before an unwanted event occurs.
The ISM Code requires companies to assess identified risks to ships, personnel and the environment and establish appropriate safeguards. Risk assessment is therefore closely connected with Safety Management System procedures, work planning, permits, maintenance, voyage operations and management decisions.
Risk is not eliminated by completing a form. Effective risk management depends on accurate hazard identification, realistic assessment, appropriate controls, communication with the people doing the work and review when conditions change.
